BALAJI KRISHNAMURTHY to ME... 10:21 pm, 17th july, 2007
copy pasting an essay i wrote, tell me if it sounds too cocky or anything :D
Take one person from Indian History (any politician, freedom fighter, king etc.) who you think had the qualities of making an ideal captain for the Indian cricket team.
The job of the captain of the Indian cricket team is one of the most difficult jobs in the world. It is a job that is constantly scrutinized and criticized. In a country like India where cricket is the only thing that transcends religion, the only thing that unites the populace, this is a really high pressure job. I would even go to the point of saying that its an insanely demanding job, with almost unrelenting fans. It's a job which only a few can handle and do well. Here are the qualities that are indispensable for the ideal Indian cricket captain, according to me:
i) Must be a really talented cricketer.
ii) Must have an impeccable character.
iii) Public should be ready to follow him unquestioningly.
iv) Should be a great cricketer, and yet a modest person at the same time.
v) Should be able to handle the media well.
vi) Should never have a lean patch( many a times Indian skippers lose their job for precisely this reason)
vii) He must be stylish in anything he does.
viii) Should be able to handle petty BCCI politics.
ix) And last but not the least, the team he leads must be invincible.
Now I will assume that whoever I choose would be a really talented cricketer, hence justifying requirement no i). The requirements for the 'ideal' captain for the Indian cricket team seem impossible in a single man. I feel the only person who can handle all this is Mr. Shivaji Rao Gaekwad alias Rajnikant. In fact I would go a step further and say that it's the fictional characters that he plays that I would select.
I would not have said this a week ago, but seeing all the frenzy around his latest release, I have no doubt left that this is the one person who is the ideal captain for our team.
Rajnikant is a person who pulls off crazy superhuman antics and still has fans, not just the country, but all over the world. His movie 'Muthu' released in Japan and ran to packed theatres. He must be one of the most stylish persons in his field (albeit ridiculously to some). One thing that is common to everyone is that, love him or hate him; everybody has spoken of his on screen stunts with awe and admiration.
According to me he satisfies all the requirements that I mentioned. He has a fan following which will never be ready to look at any of his faults. So he will have a fan following that follows him unquestioningly. He is a great in his field yet modest person. When asked how he compared himself to Amitabh Bachchan, he with all modesty said "please don't compare me with him. If I am the king, he is the emperor." He has never had a dearth of media following him everywhere, and he has never slipped up with the media. Not one of his over 100 movies has done badly, if not great. So he has never ever had a lean patch.
He is more stylish than any human being in anything he does. Be it tossing a cigarette or shooting two goons with one bullet, style must be Rajnikant's middle name. Style is associated with Rajnikant in such a way now that people say "Rajnikant is not stylish, whatever he does becomes stylish".
As far as handling BCCI politics goes, this person has handled a lot worse evils than this in his movies, so this also is not a problem.
An amazing stat about his characters is that no bad guy has been able to lay a hand on him for the last 4-5 movies he has been in. Every movie he does is a huge hit. It seems to me that whichever team he is in is bound to be invincible.
The whole point is I feel that the idea of a ideal Indian captain is so utopian, that I feel it cannot be fulfilled by any person that has walked on the soil of this country. It has to be a fictional superman, nothing less.
